I was trained in the Inskipp and Proctor model of supervision (Diploma in Integrative Supervision), enabling me to supervise across different theoretical orientations. I have developed my supervisory style since 2003, with a focus on the relational, counter-transference, working in the here and now and how to facilitate clients to utilise therapy as fully as they can (including psychoeducation). I value collaboration, humour and challenging you to be the best version of your therapist self, while also developing the supervisory relationship that best meets your needs.
For Trainee Counsellors
I have provided supervision for trainee counsellors for 16 years, which I enjoy tremendously. Your training institute is likely to have specific criteria, so for this purpose I am most likely to meet this through my Gestalt/Humanistic/Integrative model of working and I am a BACP accredited Psychotherapist/Counsellor. I also draw upon my experience of managing trainees on placement, helping to develop the client engagement skills essential for effective practice and to work with clients from diverse backgrounds with presenting issues.
A key focus for me is to help you bridge theory with client work within the limitations of the placement setting you practice in, and assisting the development of your professional authority and identity within your model. Many trainee supervisees have gone onto paid therapy roles or established a private practice, while continuing our supervisory relationship, as they value my collaborative, supportive and challenging approach.
For Experienced Counsellors:
Training and placement experiences do not necessarily prepare counsellors with a complete set of skills and knowledge required for either private practice or to compete in the employment market. Developing your professional identity and therapeutic approach takes time, effort and commitment. Supervision is a place to reflect not just on your client work, but also how you promote your own growth and self-care, engage with ethical issues, utilise psychological research, develop referral, assessment and risk management skills, professional accreditation and further training needs.

Clinical/ Consultative Supervision for Other Professionals
Mentors, helpline workers, advisors, support & substance use workers, service co-ordinators and social care professionals are increasingly accessing and valuing the benefits that supervision can bring to their role and professional development.
A supervisor with an adaptable supervision frame will increase your effectiveness and attend to:
- Processing your thoughts and feelings evoked by your work (anxiety, difficulties, 'not knowing', stuckness, & antipathy); this helps to separate out what belongs to you (personally), your client and dynamics of the working relationship.
- Separating out line management and organisational dynamics from your client work.
- Increasing your self-confidence and skills to work effectively, tapping into your strength, capability and experience.
- Providing a supportive space where you decide on the focus and content of each supervision session and we work collaboratively together.
Seeing an external supervisor provides some distance from your work setting and an independent space that aids clarity and insight, where the focus is purely on you and your work.
No understanding of therapeutic concepts is required for me to work with you.
